Take a drive up Highway 285 to Fairplay and go back in time in South Park City. The museum is on a large lot and contains 40 restored buildings with over 60,000 artifacts from life on the Frontier.
Take a walking tour from building to building and experience what it was like for pioneers, trappers, travelers and miners during the late 1880's in a mining town. Your tour begins in the chapel where you can see an organ, pews and the wardrobes for early ministers. Continue through the town visiting every piece of an old west town. There's a blacksmith, a schoolhouse, train station, passenger train, barns, courthouse, trapper's cabin, stagecoach stop, pioneer house and so much more. There is even a doctor's and dentist's office complete with many artifacts used by doctors. Don't miss the bank, post office, general store and saloon.
By the time you finish your tour, you will feel as though you stepped into a time machine and traveled back in time. Each building is set up complete with artifacts for that building. The train depot feels like a train will be approaching any minute and you must catch the train.
This museum is deep in living the history as you learn it. Preschoolers will love visiting each building, along with counting the numbered rocks outside each exhibit. There is so much to look at and learn about. Don't miss going through the caboose and climbing into the top, ringing the school bell, exploring the mine and pulling the bucket up from the well.
Although it's a bit of a drive from Denver, this museum is worth it. Create a memorable learning experience for your preschooler and step back in time.
