Word on the Street

The Japanese Garden ("the garden of water and fragrance") is an oasis of tranquility in the San Fernando Valley. While not the best spot to take young children, the garden does offer older children an opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture through the beauty and wonder of nature. The Japanese Garden offers self-guided tours and docent-guided tours. (Reservations are required for the docent-guided tours.) The 61/2 acres showcases a waterfall, Ginkgo trees, bridges and other traditional features of a Japanese garden. You'll also find a gift shop at The Japanese Garden that sells a wide- array of items from Japan and other countries in Asia and the Pacific. You can purchase ceramics, books, dolls, jewelry, origami paper, parasols, handmade greeting cards and more. Because the gift shop is staffed by volunteers, hours of operation vary. The purpose of The Japanese Garden is to create a world of meditative calm where it is possible to focus on the beauty of nature. If your child isn't old enough to (quietly) appreciate the wonders of nature, The Japanese Garden offers a nice respite for parents who can get away for a few hours of peace.
