Word on the Street

Giordano Bros. is not just a sports bar; it is a down-to-earth, family-friendly restaurant in North Beach. On game day you are likely to see toddler Sadie Jordan grinning and giving high fives to the bar staff-family while dressed in her Steelers cheerleader outfit. Sadie's parent owners Jeff and Allison have created a place where children (including those of the canine variety) are welcome to join their parents in eating, enjoying live music, and watching football.Food prices are incredibly reasonable with the specialty all-in-one sandwich priced at $6.75. Kids and adults alike will love to watch the staff use the fry cutter mounted on the wall to turn potatoes into fresh-cut fries. The unique all-in-one sandwich ingredients include vinegar-based cole slaw, fries, cheese, and your choice of meat (the "hot capp with egg" is absolutely divine) on soft Italian bread. Follow it up with an all-in-one cookie and a mimosa (or lemonade for the kiddos) and you have the perfect football brunch. Don't worry - folks with simpler tastes can enjoy a cheese sandwich or veggie chili.Giordano's was granted status as the Official Steelers Bar of San Francisco by the Pittsburgh City Council but staff and regulars are friendly to non-fans, as well. Be forewarned that it is difficult to resist cheering for the Steelers when surrounded by a boisterous, well fed and happy-go-lucky crowd! Local bands play live music Tuesday through Saturday nights and music selections vary from rock to funk to bluegrass.A word to the wise - arrive early on Steelers game days to assure yourself a seat. While children are welcome, the restaurant is not equipped with boosters or high chairs due to space limitations. Children sensitive to loud noise may not enjoy the cheering, so be prepared with an exit plan. (Photo credit: Flickr Elena777)
