The waves can be quite impressive, making the spot a popular choice among surfers and.  Parents should discuss ocean safety with their children and supervise water play.  (Note: Swimming is not advised, as the area has had several accident.) Going to the beach when it's cold may seem like an odd choice but in San Francisco, it's almost always chilly.  Since the sun can hide out for days on end in this city, it's great to take advantage of even an hour of that bright orb in the sky when it makes an appearance to stretch your legs and breath some fresh air.  This area is wonderful for families seeking an outdoor adventure and room to roam, but remember to dress warmly - the average temperature is 50-55 degrees.  With the kiddos bundled up, a thermos of hot chocolate, and plenty of shovels and pails, a fun day can be had by all even in the midst of winter!  Photo by Mirjam.
