Word on the Street

Burgess Pool in Menlo Park is a great place to take your family for a day of wet, splashy fun.  What's great about Burgess, apart from it being within walking distance on a hot day, is that it has three separate swimming areas: there's the lap pool, which provides a place for the embarrassingly-toned to stay out of my sight. There's an open pool, which provides a place for older kids who swim very well already to play on their own while their parents look on. And there's the kids' pool, in a gated-off section that also includes a lawn for the laying-out-of-towels and blankets. Friendships are formed easily in a swimming pool, especially when there is a huge waterfall fountain in the middle inspiring giggles and screeches from everyone brave enough to go underneath. The pool is perfect for a game of swimming tag, since it isn't deep enough to actually swim in and therefore requires a determined tread to stay mobile; a slow, determined tread. The fountain provides an obstacle, hiding place, speed deterrent, and cool-down spot all at the same time. Playing begun in the water can continue on the grass as you dry off, and if your child is really closing the friendship deal he can look up at you and insist that everyone take a short walk over to the playground once everyone is dry
