Word on the Street

Located between a pre-school and an elementary school on the back edge of one of Palo Alto's northeastern neighborhoods, Willow Oaks Park isn't easily noticed from Willow Road. But it's worth a visit. There are two jungle gyms, one for very small children (under 5) and the other for older kids with lots of swinging and climbing options. There is also a swingset, and a few benches for the adults to sit. on. The park is very, very well-shaded, which makes it a superior spot on bright days than Seminary Oaks. And a soccer field and tennis courts provide some additional running-around room.Dog owners will especially love this park for the dog run located behind the playground. It is fenced in (as is the playground, with a couple of gates providing access but the little ones can't escape), but the fence doesn't affect the visibility of the dogs at all. My daughter spent half of her time roaming around outside the dog run watching the neighborhood dogs play with each other. The fence-links are far enough apart, however, for little arms to sneak in. Although this is great if you want your child petting strange dogs (and yes, sometimes I think this is perfectly fine), you want to keep an eye on the hands so that they aren't reaching out to an aggressive dog running by.
