Word on the Street

Looking for a moderately-priced restaurant that the whole family can enjoy? The Stand in Encino is a great place with food that both kids and adults will relish. Known for their hot dogs, The Stand offers nine different varieties of dogs (from the Texas Turkey to the Chicken Apple)... and that's before entertaining the dozens of sauces and toppings available. You can order up your own creation or choose from one of the "Classic Stand Dogs" such as the Big Bleu Dog or the Downtown L.A. dog. In addition to hot dogs, The Stand also serves up a variety of classic burgers, "standwiches," salads, soups, sides and desserts. The available drinks include a collection of bottle sodas (Grape Crush, anyone?), root bear and cream soda on tap, assorted beers on tap or in bottles, and wine by the glass or bottle. (Visit the web site to browse the entire menu online.) The Stand, which graced the cover of Los Angeles Magazine in 2005, is one of those hip Hollywood spots that make you feel cool just for finding it. Not visible from the street, it's on Ventura Boulevard in Encino just west of Balboa Boulevard. Free parking (and the entrance to the venue) is in the rear of the building. The Stand offers plenty of seating both indoors and out so you can either take your dogs to go or eat them at the checkered-cloth covered tables. The place is clean and has a 50's diner vibe about it, with the walls covered in framed messages offering menu suggestions and slogans. If you're on a budget (and really... who isn't nowadays?), visit The Stand on any given Monday night for the best deal. Mondays from 5pm until closing is "Dollar Dog Night" when you can get $1 dogs or the fully-loaded classic Stand dogs for $2.50 each. You'll have to become a "Standcard" member to enjoy the offer, but sign-up is free and instant. And members also receive a 5% discount on every purchase so it's worth the trouble even if you're not going on a Monday!
