A Father's Day to Remember

Every year, dads look forward to the celebration of all they are and how much they do for their families. They may look a little less forward to the obligatory tie and brunch (though they always treasure those handmade crafts!). If you want to give Dad a special, just-for-him day that he'll enjoy and treasure the memory of, here are some ideas for interesting and fun Houston Father's Day celebrations.

Active Dads

Each Father's Day is the Dad's Day 5K Walk/Run in downtown Houston. It benefits prostate cancer education and awareness. Your entire family can do it together! It's a great activity for a great cause. Best of all for some is that you can carb up the night before. Go grab some Italian dinner, guilt-free. Make it a fun and do-good day for dad.

If Dad isn't a runner but does enjoy golf, consider the 12th Annual Father's Day Father/Child Charity Golf Tournament. Or perhaps Dad is more of a sailor, or wishes he was! In that case, give him the gift of sailing lessons and head down as a family to check it out. It can make a great family activity.

Literary Dads

If the dad in your family loves books and reading with your little ones, he'll enjoy the Barnes & Noble Father's Day Storytime. Kids can make cards and read silly stories and adventure stories. Make memories and find a special story just for Dad. Each time they read it, both will remember their special day together. Plus, snacks!

Foodie Dads

This one may not be ideal for kids (okay, it's a grown-up event), but it's a special treat to do "just for us adults," and then rejoin the kids later (it's before, not on, Father's Day). Foodie Dads will love this! For only $10, learn all about grapes, wines, and wine pairings at the Cooking School. (Scroll down to the June 10 WINE WORKSHOP: Wines for Father's Day - "An Ode to Dad" class. Mom and Dad can sample reds with expert instruction. Give Dad a nice break and treat. Later, schedule a family cooking event and learn how to create and make a special dish that your family can make a tradition! This is truly a gift idea that keeps on giving. Check out the other Central Market cooking classes.

Family Time Dads

One of the jewels of Houston is Discovery Green. A fantastic family day for Dad would be playing on Discovery Green and then enjoying the amazing Father's Day Lunch or Dinner at The Grove. Discovery Green offers so many interesting and individual activities family fun, such as a kayak ride on Kinder Lake. Check out other fun Father's Day activities there too.

Sporty Dads

The Houston Astros are playing the Chicago White Sox at Minute Maid Park on Father's Day weekend. The quintessential all-American good time is hot dogs and baseball! The whole family will enjoy the day, and Dad will treasure the experience.

Performing Arts Dads

For dads who love music, theater, and other arts, there's always a lot of great live performances across the Houston area. The Houston theater district is very cohesive, and the wonderful calendar shows different types of events that Dad will enjoy. Perhaps he likes historic architecture and will like the Historic Homes Tour. He might prefer the yoga class for families, or the chance to do a Segway tour of Houston. That's different! If Dad loves theater, he might love to see Sherlock Holmes at the Alley Theater!

Happy Father's Day!
