Explosive fireworks. Buttery corn on the cob. Neighborhood parades. Sweet, sticky popsicles. Does it get any better than the Fourth of July? This holiday is all about family fun, no matter how you and your little revelers decide to celebrate. The Chicago area is full of good family-friendly options for parades, firework displays, and more. We've even included a great suggestion for a fireworks-free event in case the little people in your life shy away from loud explosions (can't blame them).

Navy Pier Fireworks Display

Devoted firework enthusiasts know that the City of Chicago no longer offers its big fireworks display in Grant Park. But that doesn't mean that city dwellers can't get their fireworks fix! On July 4 at 9:00 p.m. Navy Pier offers a fantastic fireworks display, complete with patriotic musical accompaniment.  Definitely plan to use public transportation so you don't have to deal with the parking hassle and consider skipping the crowds entirely by viewing the show from a nearby alternate location, like the Ohio Street Beach.

Evanston Fourth of July Parade

This daylong celebration promises everything from three-legged races to pie-eating contests. The festivities culminate in the big parade (the theme this year is "Unity through Diversity"). The parade kicks off at 2:00 p.m. on July 4 and runs from Central Park Avenue east on Central Street to Ashland Avenue. Dedicated parade-goers start setting up their lawn chairs to reserve the prime viewing spots as early as July 1.

Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Celebration

This celebration kicks off on June 30 with a regatta and picnic in the park. The Fourth of July offers a packed schedule of events, featuring a showstopper of a parade followed by a full afternoon of carnival games, entertainment, and food. Attendees can purchase a $3 wristband to enjoy all of the activities including moonwalks, an inflatable obstacle course, penny carnival games, face painting, live music, and dancing, At dusk, this festive day concludes with a fireworks display.

The Chicago History Museum's 53rd Annual Fourth of July Festival

Take part in this historical celebration featuring live music, costumed "founding fathers" reading the Declaration of Independence and even "the world's tallest Uncle Sam." The kiddos can even get decked out in red, white and blue attire and participate in a parade.  Admission is free and you can rest assured that this celebration is fireworks-free (so no scared little ones!).

However your family celebrates, take advantage of the opportunity for some patriotic fun together. And be sure to call ahead or visit the websites of these venues to confirm all dates and times. Happy Fourth!
