Hidden Gems: Back-to-School Shopping in Houston

Mommie Chic and Me, League City, TX Lately, moms have started changing their shopping habits, preferring to visit local, independent stores. The benefit of these stores is that patrons get to know the people who own them, and vice versa. Usually the owners are people who are in the community. It's a more personal experience that supports the community. Often, shop owners come to know their patrons' style and size preferences, and tend to send notices or hold items for patrons, providing a more personal, positive, efficient and successful shopping experience. They also tend to be honest about their stock, fair in exchanges, offer high-quality merchandise, and share tips and sales.

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, these locally owned shops are the most popular go-to spots. In these stores, shoppers can find the clothes they and their kids can agree upon: good quality, fair price, and age-appropriate.

These are our top five picks for great stores that will make you and your kids happy and fashionable:

Mommie Chic and Me, League City

Mommie Chic and Me (pictured above) is a quaint boutique in historic League City that specializes in unique baby gifts, children's clothing and hard-to-find merchandise for moms-to-be. They are located on Main Street (FM 518) in the Founder's Square Shopping, directly across Main Street from League Park. Girls sizes up to 10 and boys sizes up to 4T, well-made clothes and brands, stylish and unique but hearty enough for all kinds of play. It's the perfect place to shop for for special days because the store offers complementary but not necessarily identical outfits that can be worn again and again. Plus, it's full of great accessories, and the owner is able to get things customized such as initials on bows. Best of all, it's got a small play area with TV and DVD entertainment for kids while you shop and, the diaper changing is stocked with the essentials in case of "emergencies." It's also right by some of those darling historic stores, including a tearoom that has a great kid-friendly space and lovely snacks that will tempt even picky kids.

Tulips & Tutus, Houston

This store offers quality children's clothing and shoes, and a great selection of baby or mom-to-be gift items. It's been voted best of the web, and #1 Best Children's Gifts in Houston on KPRC's Click2Houston's Best. Shoppers say the owner is very patient, helpful and full of ideas as personal and unique as the clothes and gifts in her store. It's quaint, unique and chic with age-appropriate clothes that even grandmothers love, while kids think they are cool.

JP Children's Boutique, The Woodlands

JP Children's Boutique, Inc. is a cornerstone in the Woodlands, Houston, Conroe, and surrounding family communities. One-on-one customer relationships ensure shoppers have a personal shopping experience for their children, friends, and family. It's a proud supporter of local community charities, school fundraisers and foundations. Team members are trained for proper clothing and shoe fitting. They offer hundreds of lines and styles, "distinctive clothing for distinctive children." It mixes trendy and traditional, with a size range of 0 to 16. They also offer unique gifts.

Freckles, A Children's Boutique, Cypress

Freckles Boutique...a place where every child is unique! At Freckles, you can find clothing and accessories ranging from classic to funky with a twist. Girl sizes are preemie to size 14. Boy sizes are preemie to size 8. You can find specials, tips, and more on their Facebook wall, and the staff is equally helpful. They're currently offering great back-to-school outfit ideas, including Tractor jeans, which are uber-comfy.

Latte Tots, Missouri City

Like the others, Latte Tots is an independently-owned local children's and women's gift and clothing store. It offers fun fashion shows, and the personal shopping experience you find at cute little local shops. It offers tips and deals on its Facebook page, such as BOGO and Groupon. They carry special seasonally-themed outfits, too, and are connected with a local photographer for special photography events.  They're open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

From the Parents

  • Parent # 1

Mom & Grandparents -DO NOT give JPs Childrens Boutique your hard earned money. I had the MOST insulting experience there after my parents spent over $500 on clothing for our boys. When I took them back to exchange a couple sizes they called the POLICE on me! Unimaginable, I had lost my voice due to illness but got a sitter & made the 2 hour round trip to exchange sizes or return things because the receipt said I only had 30 days to do so. They refused to even exchange sock sizes & when the police arrived & found I had no voice they asked me why this woman called them in the first place! After speaking to our moms group I found 3 other women had horrible experiences there! There are other wonderful family owned businesses like Sweet Bambini on Memorial & Berings in Houston that have more beautiful clothes, love children & respect good paying customers.
