Winter Sports

While one sports season winds down, it seems another two or three begin. And our youngest athletes can't ever seem to get enough. Whether watching their sporting heroes on TV or at an actual game, our children strive to emulate their every move: winding up, passing, dribbling, shooting, throwing, sliding, tackling and catching whatever they can, whenever they can. Sound familiar?

And as the parents of future sporting stars, we certainly want to encourage their commitment to team sports, regular practice, good health and a natural affinity for the game. So how can we do this? With the holiday season fast approaching, now is the time to collect ideas about what sports toys, games and books might teach them to continue practicing the sports that they love.

100 Hoops

Sports and counting (or scorekeeping) go together, so we can't help but applaud a new toy that allows our little ones to practice both at the same time. As your child shoots and dunks, this basketball net will add up the points on its electronic scoreboard, and announce them to the roar of a cheering crowd. You can program the game to add points by intervals of 1, 2, 5, or 10, to count backwards, or even to count in Spanish each time the player scores. Small hoopsters will hone their counting skills along with their jump shots, and the bigger b-ball enthusiasts in your house will no doubt enjoy the game as well.
