This 1962 Maurice Sendak gem was the beloved favorite of its day - think the passion that a child of the '70s and '80s had for Shel Silverstein's silliness and cross it with the diligence that same child used to memorize the order of the days of the week in Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and then back it up a decade or so. But this is no dusty relic. It is a funny set of poems, each about the different months of the year and each with the refrain (almost a punch line, in this book) "chicken soup with rice." Your little one will be chiming in by May, even on the first read. After that, neither lunchtime nor the calendar will ever be the same!
