How Many Will Fit?

ages 3-6

Supplies

Small clear plastic jar and collection of the same kind of items, such as marbles, Goldfish crackers, peanuts or cottonballs.

Activity Detail

Here's a twist on a common game of guessing how many of an item are in a container. Have your child look at an empty, small, clear plastic jar and a group of small objects (such as peanuts, cottonballs, marbles, or Goldfish crackers) and estimate how many of the objects will fit inside the container. Your child can then check their estimation by counting the objects as they place them in the jar. To keep this activity simple, use a small jar and large enough objects that only 5 to 10 will fit inside. To increase the challenge, use larger jars and smaller items.
