Presidential Coin Rubbings

ages 4-6

Supplies

Thin white printing or drawing paper; coins -- at least one penny, one nickel, one dime, and one quarter, depending on how many kids are participating; crayons

Activity Detail

This a great activity for President's Day, if your children have the day off or have been talking about the presidents in school: Place a coin "heads-up" under thin white printing or drawing paper and let your child color over it until a rubbing appears. Do this with every denomination, discussing each president as you go: Lincoln for the penny; Jefferson for the nickel, Franklin D. Roosevelt for the dime, and Washington for the quarter. With older children, you can also talk a little bit about which president each one was (e.g. Washington was our first president) or why the president was important enough to be featured on a coin.
