Make Way for Ducklings

by Robert McCloskey

For ages 2-6 years

This award-winning and ever popular classic really needs no introduction from us: it's the official children's book of Massachusetts -- need we say more? But truly, there is good reason why Mr. and Mrs. Mallard's adventures have remained so beloved for all this time. These ducks are just too funny and adorable, the pictures of their proud strutting through Boston streets and traffic absolutely comical. If you ever happen to visit that fair city with your little ones, be sure to visit the (bronzed) Mallard brood at the Boston Public Garden in person.

Kids are the littlest on the totem pole -- always underfoot and getting the way of adults. Which is why, I think, my daughter loves this book so much -- the ducklings strut right through town pretty oblivious while all the adults hold up traffic for them. It's a goofy concept, and we dig the goof.

A real Boston classic, Make Way for Ducklings tells the story of a pair of mallard ducks who decide to raise their family on an island in the lagoon in the Boston Public Garden. The book, first published in 1941, won the 1942 Caldecott Medal for its illustrations. Thereâ??s even a bronze statue of Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings in the Public Garden and each spring, the city hosts an annual Duckling Day parade, in which children dressed as ducklings and their parents retrace the path taken by the ducks in the book to get from the Charles River to the Public Garden. Every Bostonian (or duck lover!) should have a copy.
