The Runaway Bunny

by Margaret Wise Brown

For ages birth+

This bedtime favorite is as beautiful a love poem as has ever been written. The story's imaginary game of hide-and-seek between a little bunny and his mother appeals to children's dreams of running away and even stronger desire always to be found. Its gentle tempo and dream-like images have sent countless little ones off to sleep with the lulling assurance that their very own mother bunny will be there no matter where they go, and whenever they awake.

Like Mooshinindy, I have this book memorized. That's what happens when you read something every night for three months. We've moved on to other books now, but I know in the very near future this book will once again take it's place in our night time routine. I can't wait.

Oh I love this book. I loved reading it to my son when he was small with the idea of reassuring him that no matter how good or bad he was on any given day I as his mommy would always be there for him. He once had a bad dream that he got on a train and it left before I could get on with him. I told him that like the Runaway Bunny even if he tried to leave me I would always find him. : )

Between you and me, every time I read this book a get a little choked up. When you read it for yourself, you'll understand why: it's the combination of beautiful words, soothing language and rhythmic tone that elevates this book to classic status.

I have read this book so many times to my children that I know it by heart but I'm still not bored by it. I think the reason I still enjoy reading it is the whimsical illustrations of the bunny's big ears as boat sails and the image of the momma bunny in waders fly fishing for her baby. The baby bunny wants to run from his momma so kids sometimes do but momma explains she will do anything and go anywhere to be with him. It is a sweet book and it still makes me smile even after all those repeat readings.

I have this book memorized, as I read it to my daughter every night from birth. I actually bought it for my mom after getting over a rough patch in our relationship, and I can still recite it anytime or anyplace and love it every bit as much.

Oh, I love this book. I think that it has a timeless and ageless appeal. I love to snuggle my babies and read this to them, and my four-year-old daughter still picks it off the shelf for bedtime reading, even though she knows exactly where the bunny is hidden on each page and she has heard the story dozens of times.

The first time I read this book as an adult, I thought it was a bit creepy but the kids love it and now I do too. Finding the baby bunny is always fun for us. Even my 4 year old still loves this book and knows all the words by heart.

I'm sometimes surprised that my kids still ask for this book. They still love to look for the little bunny as he hides from his mother in the trees and wind and flowers. Finding the bunny is hardly a challenge -- it's not exactly Where's Waldo, and besides we've read the book so many times they know exactly where to look -- but they enjoy it anyway. Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. My babies are beginning to assert their independence, cut the apron strings, but they still like to know that mama bunny will always finds baby bunny -- just like their own mama will.
