The Lorax

by Dr. Seuss

For ages 3-6 years

There is no better way to teach a powerful lesson about caring for the earth and our environment, and there is absolutely no more fun way to do it than this: pull your little one onto your lap and tell her the story of the Lorax, the allegory about the greedy Once-ler who decimated his gorgeous corner of the world by clear-cutting Truffula Trees for his mass-market Thneeds. Teach her to think like the Lorax, who speaks for the trees "for the trees have no tongues." Instill in her the eloquent bottom line: "Unless someone like you/ cares a whole awful lot/ nothing is going to get better./ It's not." And then delight with her as the child at the end is entrusted with the sole remaining Truffula Tree seed. Your little one would surely know what to do with it, wouldn't she?

The Lorax is the kind of story where you're getting a lesson without realizing it, even for us adults who know that Dr. Suess always included a political morale and a worldly message. My son gravitated to this book every time we went to the library, and we even say a live play of it at a children's theatre. The message deliberate waste and the consequence makes sense even for the littlest ones.
