The Cat in the Hat

by Dr. Seuss

For ages 2-6 years

Galvanized by the 1954 Life magazine profile "Why Johnny Can't Read" lambasting the uninspired Dick and Jane primers, Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) meant to teach kids how to read by using clever phonics to hold their interest (of all novel concepts!). The Cat in the Hat is now (and has been for decades since its publication) the paradigmatic beginning reader book. Yes, there are unexplainable happenings, starting with why these kids were left home alone, but this is supposed to be fanciful, remember?! Setting a little imagination afire is exactly what reading is all about! So, let the Cat (a stand-in for Geisel himself in many unrelated doodles) barge into your house on a rainy afternoon (or any ol' afternoon at all, frankly), and enjoy the antics that ensue.

Dr Suess books are spot on for reinforcing the concept of rhyming for a preschooler. There is not another book we read that uses it so effectively and entertainingly at the same time.

Dr. Seuss has never been matched in his ability to teach kids to read through the use of phonics, combined with imaginative storytelling and just plain silliness. My son, who was an early reader, loved Cat in the Hat, among others and I really feel like it accelerated his progress. He also did a lot of laughing reading this book and if you can both laugh and learn, it's a combination that's tough to beat!

I loved the anarchic spirit of this book. It's great fun to read, even over and over and over and over and over like we have around this house. And the question "What would YOU do if your mother asked YOU?" always elicits giggles, as well as a chance to discuss the importance of telling the truth even if it might get you into trouble.
