He Came with the Couch

by David Slonim

For ages 2+ years

This is a wacky, offbeat book in the most engaging possible way. No sweet baby farm animals here, this is a slightly wild-eyed, not-so-slightly eccentric family who finds themselves in the company of a, well, a 'creature' who arrived home with their flea market couch. The whole story is funny and odd, and at the same moment that you might not be able to figure out what to make of it, your little one will likely be absolutely enchanted by it. Our little ones clearly didn't find the creature odd one bit, and like little Sophie in the book, they too would have championed his staying. And when 'it' earns its keep by miraculously saving Sophie from a terrible fall, the little listeners cheered along. It's a fun, different book for anybody, but it's a particularly good choice if you are looking for something silly and non-traditional and a little zany. And really, how could you not love a book where a couch (and its resident creature) get taken to the Lincoln Memorial (with its armchair and resident country-saver) for inspiration? This is an amusing and unpredictable book.

He Came with the Couch is a recent addition to Cara's bookshelf. Cara found the book while we were playing at Barnes and Noble and she wouldn't put it down so I ended up having to buy it. There was something about the "creature" that she seemed to love. I love the great illustrations and they help make this a book that I don't mind reading three times before tucking Cara into bed for the night.
