Are You My Mother?

by P.D. Eastman

For ages 2-6 years

A perennial favorite since its publication in 1960, this story is absolutely engrossing to most toddlers and preschoolers. A mother bird whose egg is about to hatch flies off in search of food, so when the wee birdie emerges, he finds himself all alone. His first question: where is my mother? Off he goes in search of said maternal parent, but meets instead a kitten, hen, cow, and dog, none of them birds, he learns, and none of them his mother. The intrepid little newborn continues on his quest, encountering even unlikelier candidates in the form of a plane, boat, and enormous digger. It's a regular page-turner for the preschool set!

This book came in one of the first shippments of our book of the month type club. I was overjoyed because I remembered repeatedly borrowing it from the library as a child. My boys love it just as much and really hope every time that the baby bird will find his mother.

I will admit, I get a little chocked up sometimes when we read this, because my preschooler likes to tell the story and when he asks in his sweet voice "are you my mother?" it tears at my heartstrings- but in a good way. I never get tired of this one.

Anything with the word Mommy in it can get my preschoolers attention! And, of course as silly as the story is makes it that much more appealing to it's audience. The little bird's quest to find his Mother is adorable and, of course, my son loves to join in (all the while pretending he can read!). Very cute book.

Oh what a silly silly story. So of course my preschooler adores it. When a baby bird falls from his nest, he is on a quest to find his mother. We have read this book over and over, yet every time our preschooler joins the little bird in his search.
