The Lorax

by Dr. Seuss

For ages 3-6 years

There is no better way to teach a powerful lesson about caring for the earth and our environment, and there is absolutely no more fun way to do it than this: pull your little one onto your lap and tell her the story of the Lorax, the allegory about the greedy Once-ler who decimated his gorgeous corner of the world by clear-cutting Truffula Trees for his mass-market Thneeds. Teach her to think like the Lorax, who speaks for the trees "for the trees have no tongues." Instill in her the eloquent bottom line: "Unless someone like you/ cares a whole awful lot/ nothing is going to get better./ It's not." And then delight with her as the child at the end is entrusted with the sole remaining Truffula Tree seed. Your little one would surely know what to do with it, wouldn't she?

This is one of those books that was truly ahead of its time. As I child, I loved this book for its clever wording, colorful art, and interesting story; and now I appreciate it even more for its ability to teach environmentalism to even the youngest child. As a parent, we can take away as much from this book as our children can. One of my favorite books of all time.

It took awhile for our daughter to warm up to this one, as it does require a bit of an attention span to get through it all and the concept is a bit abstract, especially since this may be their first introduction to a story that starts at one time and then switches back to the past. Even if the logic of the story doesn't catch on right away, your child will certainly be attracted to the vibrant colors and rhythmic language endemic to a Dr. Seuss tale.

The Lorax is the kind of story where you're getting a lesson without realizing it, even for us adults who know that Dr. Suess always included a political morale and a worldly message. My son gravitated to this book every time we went to the library, and we even say a live play of it at a children's theatre. The message deliberate waste and the consequence makes sense even for the littlest ones.
