Peter Rabbit

by Beatrix Potter

For ages 2+ years

The world of Beatrix Potter can come as a bit of a shock in our kinder, gentler era of child-rearing and children's books. The rabbits here don't spend much time on games like Guess How Much I Love You. Rather, Peter is dubbed ?very naughty" from the book's beginning, and, in Potter-land, naughty bunnies get their due (in this case, a dose of camomile tea ? but at least Peter escapes the switch, unlike his naughty contemporaries, Tom Kitten and Benjamin Bunny). Yet naughty bunnies also get to have all of the adventures, and what a thrilling adventure this is! Full of the radish feasts and hairbreadth escapes that have kept children riveted since the book's publication in 1902. With its utterly beautiful illustrations and delightful cadences, Peter Rabbit is, more than a century later, still a must in any child's library.

There's a reason Peter Rabbit has appealed to generations of little bunnies, who inherently understand the curiosity that sometimes gets you into trouble! We have at least two collections of these stories at our house. I love the old-fashioned prose and gorgeous illustrations, my kids just like hearing about Peter's adventures!

We have four of five versions of Peter Rabbit, who my daughter consistently calls Poor Peter. I like the adaptability of the story to different age groups. Some aspects may be glossed over with the younger set and then need to be discussed at length with older kids.

My husband loves Peter Rabbit so much that he wanted to decorate Cara's nursery in nothing but Peter Rabbit characters. He tries to read this story to Cara at least once a month and she really seems to enjoy the quality time that it affords them.

I have been reading this to my daughter since she was very young. The illustrations are beautiful and calming and the story teaches a good lesson about doing what mom says. My daughter still laughs when Peter sneezes in the watering can and she's heard it a hundred times in 3 years! A great classic tale of why it's not good to be naughty.
