Madeline

by Ludwig Bemelsman

For ages 2+ years

We find ourselves double-checking the 1939 copyright on this wonderful tale almost every time we read it. Could it really be from such a different world? It's snappily modern -- the other girls at Miss Clavel's desperately wishing for their own appendectomies after seeing all of the loot in Madeline's hospital room -- at the same time as it's hauntingly historical (the "very sad" girls with the wounded soldier) and charmingly old-fashioned (the doctor dialing DANton-ten-six to reach the nurse). The illustrations of Paris are true masterpieces, and the current editions have a listing at the end telling you which lovely parks and squares and landmarks they depict. The story is funny and charming and quick and lasting. You may have your hands full with however many little ones you already have underfoot, but these are 12 little girls whom you will easily welcome into your home. Don't worry -- they always stay in their two straight lines, remember?

"In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines..." How many of you can finish this book from memory? I know I can, and I could do it even before I ever read it to my kids. If you remember this book from your own childhood it is a great one to share with your own kids as it definitely holds up even 70 years later.

My mother read Madeline to me, and I read Madeline to Gigi. She loves these little girls in two straight lines and asks endless questions about them and is that woman mommy to all of them? I love the drawings and the stories still work, this book is a classic in our library.

What is not to love about Madeline? I loved her when I was growing up and my boys love her too. Since it's a book about a "girl" I got our first Madeline book from the library and she's been a favorite with the boys ever since. She is a bit mischievous, but has the spunk and personality to win not only the hearts of the characters in the story, but those reading as well.

Madeline is a great role model -- a brave heroine who bends the rules just a little and then draws on great inner strength to triumph through adversity. I love kids' books that don't shy away from difficult emotional terrain, and Madeline is one of the greatest.

For my preschooler, who is fascinated with bodily functions, checking out Madeline from the library was a great move. We read it every night at bedtime for 2 weeks, and each time he fixated on the hospital, the presents, and where was Madeline's father? The book started a lot of interesting conversations between a 3-year-old and his mommy.
