This gem of a book captures your little one's wonder far beyond the languid midsummer days its pages depict. The classic Carle collage illustrations start this time with a sunset (rather than the sunrise of your other adored Caterpillar or Spider books or the like). And the tiny firefly follows every possible flashing lead to try to find the lights of his friends. Like a little one looking at the various denim-clad knees around him in a crowd while he looks for mom, the little firefly checks out every lead on his hunt for his friends -- a candle, a flashlight, a lantern, the flashing light of a dog and a cat and an owl, and of course a glorious fireworks display. Be sure to read the last page in a dimly lit room so that those wonder-filled eyes can flash right along with the little beacons of all the fireflies reunited.

Once again, Eric Carle has created a bedtime favorite of ours. Snug in bed, my children adore reading this book about a lonely firefly searching through the night for a light of his own kind. My children are facinated by fireflies and their facination holds true with this book also. And of course, when that firefly finds other fireflies, and the final page blinks back at us, my kids are ALMOST as excited as if they are seeing fireflies in their own night sky.

Follow the journey of the little firefly as he investigates various shining lights in search of other fireflights. This book contains all the essential elements of a great Eric Carle book: the animal characters, the great illustrations, the repetetive text. My kids have opened and closed this book so often that the twinkling firefly lights on the last page no longer light up. Which reminds me: I'd better get our copy and change the batteries.
