Tinkertoy Classic Jumbo Set

by Hasbro

For ages

Ah, tinkertoys. The very mention of tinkertoys brings on a flood of nostalgic memories, doesn't it? Can't you recall almost exactly the feeling of fitting the rods and wheels together? Don't you remember the wacky structures you used to create and proudly display? One of the best things about these classic toys is precisely that store of memories that makes us want to get down on the floor and relive a piece of childhood with our own kids. So let's see if we can help them create something even wilder and wackier than what we did way back when.

My brother had these when we were kids and I totally coveted them. Days that he let me play with them were good times. Gigi has just started to develop her sense of fine detail in building structure so the totally irresistible and inspiring wheels and sticks are now becoming her favourite toy at school. But at home this is one of those toys she has to share with me (I still love it).

I am not a big fan of toys that come with a million little pieces, but then again, I'm not the one who is going to play with them, I'm just the one who cleans them up. We have the set that comes in a round drum with a tin top, so the kids like to use the sticks to "play the drums" thereby making this a noisy toy on top of it all. We'll find Tinkertoy pieces until we retire, I'm sure, but the kids love them.

My son truly enjoys two things: following his creativity and building things by reading his directions. While these seem like contradictory statements (they sort of are), he loves to stretch both part of his brain, and toys like this help do just that. Plus, they are really fun for me to play along with.

If the Tinkertoys come out, I am right there playing with the kids. My son likes to make "stars" by putting the sticks all around a wheel. He hasn't yet figured out that you can make cars and other moving creations. Don't worry--mommy will show him all the tricks from when she was a kid.

If you have a pint-sized builder in your life, chances are that you own a Tinkertoy Construction Set. There's magic in that tall, plastic-topped can, and I'm always amazed by the huge variety of buildings my kids manage to construct. Turn the kids loose on the Tinkertoys, and let their little hands and imaginations get to work.

3Po and Jammy love using Tinkertoys to bring spaceships, robots, blasters, and other figments of their imagination to life. Older children will enjoy following the instructions for some of the elaborate creations, but for now my kids ignore the manual and do their own inventing. With all the time they spend building their contraptions and playing with them, this toy is good for literally hours of play.
