The Three Snow Bears

by Jan Brett

For ages 2 to 6 years

What is it exactly about the story of Goldilocks that so enchants the preschool set? Is it the rhythm of the story? The fun of going for a walk while breakfast cools? The difficulty of finding a chair that fits? The delight of imagining coming home to find someone sleeping in your bed? No matter - it does enchant, that's all. And this adaptation is especially lovely, casting Aloo-ki as the curious little girl and three magnificent polar bears as the porridge-makers and the ice floes of the Arctic as the fairytale forest. Wintry and wonderful, this is a tale for the ages.

We added The Mitten by Jan Brett to our kids' library long ago but just discovered Three Snow Bears recently and it became a quick favorite. The illustrations are beautifully detailed sketches that I enjoy looking at while reading. The story of an Inuit girl named Aloo-ki in the 3 polar bears' igloo is like in the classic Goldilocks and the 3 bears. Aloo-ki tries the bears' things out while she explores but instead of porridge and chairs, she tries their boots, soup before laying down for a nap. In this tale, the bears also save the girl's missing dogs before discovering her slumbering in their warm igloo. The bears aren't angry with the curious girl in this non-scary book appropriate for young children. Perfect for cold winter evenings, we'll be reading The Three Snow Bears a lot this season.

Every child should have a Jan Brett book in their home library. The Three Snow Bears is essentially the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears but told with an Artic twist. The beautiful story has gorgeous illustrations like those in Jan Brettâ??s winter classic, The Mitten.
