The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming
by Lemony Snicket
For ages
We must clarify: this wacky little book is best given to the biggest kid at your Hanukkah table - one who can be safely charged with lighting the candles or even driving to the store to buy the candles in the first place. It is most likely not for preschoolers, although you may well decide to open it up for a family read once your little one spots Dad chuckling his way through it in the den. It's a zany tale of a latke who objects vociferously to the hot oil treatment in the frying pan, and it moves quickly through a wild medley of Hanukkah and Christmas compare-and-contrasts and then settles in a slightly wry but touching moral about finding one's place in this world. And it does all this in a classic Lemony Snicket style - your preschooler isn't a fan yet, but just blink and he will be. It is a nutty, lovable story for a nutty, lovable season. Enjoy!
