Olivia Saves the Circus

by Ian Falconer

For ages

What are the prerequisites for performing in a circus? Clown school? Training in acrobatics or animal handling? Actually, none of the above. A grandiose sense of self and a bit of imagination are really all that is required, and Olivia certainly has both. Ian Falconer's tribute to the fascination of the circus for little ones is wry, witty, and comical in his usual fashion. Olivia imagines herself as a tattooed lady, trapeze artist, dog trainer, lion tamer, and queen of the trampoline, but we just think she's the funniest, piggiest little clown we've ever seen.

It's clear that Ian Falconer "gets" kids. These books are so down-to-earth and do such a good job of describing what it's like to be a kid. This story is so simple and easy to follow, but still so enjoyable for parents too.

I can't begin to count the number of times my daughter has proclaimed herself "Queen of the Trampoline" while pretending to be Olivia. The whole series has been popular at my house since she was about a year old and now that she's three she is starting to get the jokes.

Olivia is my daughter in pig form: imaginative, quirky, and not uncommonly misunderstood. The circus Olivia is a particular favorite because Olivia gets to narrate to her class about how she played every role at the town circus -- from tattooed lady to trapeze artist. Since those are two of my daughter's main career aspirations, this is one of her favorite books.
