The Little Gorilla

by Ruth Lercher Bornstein

For ages 2-6 years

What happens on your preschooler's birthday? Balloons, funny hats, cakes, presents, friends, shrieks of joy, laughter, probably some tears, and sheer exhaustion at the end of the day. Amidst all the madness, your little one might not quite yet grasp that all this means that he is getting older and bigger. When that realization hits, usually around age three or four, it is usually accompanied by pride and anticipation, but sometimes a bit of anxiety creeps in as well. Here is the perfect antidote - this little gorilla, the beloved baby of the jungle, is just as well-loved when he is grown as he was when he was tiny. It's a message that every four-year-old, or fourty-year-old needs to hear.

My son has a teeny tiny board book version of this book - it's perfect to throw in a bag and bring to dinner. Which we have done. Many times. That's why there's food crusted on almost every page, and "Little Gorilla" is requested whenever we go to a restaurant. How does Little Gorilla get so big? By eating all of his dinner! (Not without tossing the book and every other toy onto the floor first, of course.)
