Flotsam

by David Wiesner

For ages 4+ years

This book, which like Wiesner's earlier award-winning books contains no text, might be a bit challenging for the typical four-year-old to decipher, but it seems well-suited for older children with a lot of imagination. The story begins with a boy exploring creatures at the beach. A big wave blindsides the boy and tosses an old underwater camera onto the beach. The boy takes the camera to a photo-developing store and the pictures prove to be astonishing! The boy discovers a photo of an octopus reading a book to a school of fish on the sofa. The boy also finds a picture of a young girl who, in turn, is holding photos of other children from around the world and different eras. The boy takes a picture of himself holding the photo and tosses the camera back into the ocean. The story ends with a little girl finding the camera washed up on a distant beach. The book is rich in detail, but leaves plenty of room for children to create their own story lines.

I'm with Graham and Mimi on the age range of Flotsam. Cara and I started reading this book when she was around a year old and we haven't stopped reading it yet. I think the key is the fact that there are so many really interesting illustrations that Cara is able to make up more complex stories as she's gotten older. The book seems to grow with her as her understanding of the book has grown. Really great book.

I agree with Graham on the age range thing... Both my boys (ages 4 and 7) love this book. We got it from our local library first and it was such a hit we had to have it. The pictures are fantastic. As the boys look at it more and more they make up things about what the camera will see next! Wonderful book.

Let me respectfully disagree with your age range -- my daughter loved this book from about the age of 18 months! The key is in the pictures -- they're so richly detailed, so evocative that I found I could give the briefest explanation of the "plot" and then let the kid go to town finding the magic on each page. Best of all is that the adults in the book are distracted and sort of hapless -- all the adventure is child-created and child-enjoyed.
