Where the Sidewalk Ends

For ages 2-6 years

You surely remember this simply spectacular collection of poetry from when you were (ahem) younger. Here's a hint - if you don't want to count exactly how many decades ago that was, don't buy the special edition with "30th anniversary" emblazoned on the cover. Alright then, it's not new to you, but it will be to your preschooler, and Mr. Silverstein is the universally acknowledged master of funny poems for kids for good reason. While settling in with this classic, perhaps you'll rediscover the joys of Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout and her consequences of her, um, choices about trash-related chores. Perhaps you'll recall the instructions for bathing an armadillo. At a minimum you'll remind yourself of "Teddy said it was a hat / And so I put it on. / Now Dad's yelling / Where the heck's the toilet plunger gone?!'" Well, assuming you ever forgot it in the first place...

We purchased this collection for our preschooler last Christmas. At first she was intimidated by the lack of brilliant pictures, however once we started reading the incredible, silly and wondrous poems, she instantly became a fan. The poems not only give her inspiration for her own imagination, but also make her feel that being silly is totally ok.

Silverstein does a phenomenal job of making poetry accessible to everyone whether they're two or twenty. This is a book that should hold a very prominent place on every family's book shelf.

My sister and I shared a copy of this book when we were little and I remember reading it from cover to cover everytime I picked it up. I just got it for my daughter and love that I remember so many of the poems.

This is one of those books that most parents wouldn't pick up on a casual stop by the bookstore, but that deserves a place on every family's book shelf. I still remember the time in elementary school when the librarian couldn't keep up with the requests for checkouts on this book. Your kids will love having it read to them now, and will read it over and over again to themselves later on.
