The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

by Linda Williams

For ages 2-6 years

We like this book for taking the fearfulness of Halloween head on - pumpkin-head on, no less. A little old lady walking through the fall woods is haunted by a pair of boots (CLOMP, CLOMP), a shirt (SHAKE, SHAKE), other disembodied articles of clothing, and a talking jack-o'-lantern (BOO, BOO!). Is she afraid? No. Does she pick up her pace, nevertheless? Well, yes. In the end, she summons all her courage (just as our little ones may have to do on Halloween night), and puts the haunted clothes and pumpkin in their place. It's a wonderful read-aloud book with enough repetition, funny sounds, and suspense to make it a Halloween favorite.

I always try and find a new book for each child for each holiday and this year, this one made it onto my nearly five year-old's nightstand. She loved it so much, she started to beg me to change the articles of clothing to other silly things like two purple sharks. I had to pack it away with the Halloween decor otherwise I'd be reading it nightly through Easter!
