The Very Hungry Caterpillar Game

by University Games

For ages 3+ years

When your child is ready for her first board game (and she's probably almost there!), we can't think of a better one to start with than the new Very Hungry Caterpillar Game from University Games. Candyland may be the classic first game, but why not give a bunch of furry, chubby caterpillars munching on fruits, pickles, and pizza a chance? Each player (or caterpillar) advances around the board, collecting yummy treats, and the first one to become a butterfly wins! What better way for young children to absorb the idea of the caterpillar's life-cycle? The game also promotes color recognition, counting, and fine motor skills.

My younger kids have recently gotten into The Very Hungry Caterpillar and think it is hilarious how much the caterpillar can eat. This game, based on the Eric Carle book, guides kids around the board as the worm collects food. The rules are much like Candyland and easy for young kids to understand.

This board game based on the book of the same name by Eric Carle is a very good beginner game. It teaches the life cycle of a caterpillar as well as how to take turns and how a board game works. The pieces are sturdy and have a few extra in case pieces are lost.

What kid doesn't love The Very Hungry Caterpillar book? My son just turned three and I got this game for him and he is starting to get the hang of it. After they get the concept of how to play the game, your child will be thrilled to become a butterfly! Never too early to start a game night with your little one.
