The Original Colorforms

by University Games

For ages

This toy is so cool (there's no better word) that is has acquired an almost cult-like following not just among kids but also among grown-up artists and designers. The set includes 350 brightly colored shapes that stick when pressed to the black shiny surfaces in this spiral bound book, and can be rearranged in different patterns and images to your little one's heart's content. Your young designer can compose images as abstract or literal as she chooses, fitting the pieces together like blocks, or overlapping them for texture and depth. The possibilities are endless and so is the play. You'll want to take a turn yourself, and will soon see why this set is so addictively satisfying to play with. (It also makes a particularly great travel toy - plenty of artistic gratification with zero mess in a light, compact set? It may actually be the only travel toy you'll ever need for the four and older crowd). This colorforms first appeared in 1951, and was recently given the Parents Choice award for Top Classic Toy.

Loved Colorforms as a kid. I use them now in my job working with toddlers with special needs. My daughter recently found a set while investigating my therapy toy bag. What a treat!

This toy isn't really a toy -- it's an artistic palette for all kinds of creative expression. The shape combinations are truly infinite, and it's impossible for anyone to open up this set and be bored. A great travel game, and one that will please kids of a wide age range (adults too!).

When I was a child, I played with Colorforms for hours. So when I saw this in a toy store while I was pregnant, I bought it right away. This cherished game continues to be a favorite in our household. The kids adore the countless ways to stick shapes together to create a character or scenery. Whether on boards or on windows - Colorforms is the classic game to spend hours of creativity together.

There's a story in my family's lore, that revolves around bribing me with Colorforms to get me through a week of kindergarten without tears. And let me tell you, these toys are so cool, they did the trick. I saw these and decided I had to get them for my kids to enjoy just as much as I did (and they have). However, their behavior has not improved much. I guess I forgot to ask for something in return! Colorforms are great when you need a few minutes of the kids sitting still while you load the car, start dinner or take a shower. And, I love the fact these are a no-mess toy. Even young (preschooler-aged) kids can clean these up when they are done playing.

I never owned a set of Colorforms as a child, but now that I've given my children a set, I totally see why this toy is a classic. There's nothing a kid can't make with these brightly colored shapes; the possibilities are practically endless. Looking for something to keep the kids occupied while you cook dinner, take a shower or write toy reviews for the Internet? Colorforms are your answer!
