Harold and the Purple Crayon

by HarperTrophy

For ages 2-6 years

This much-loved story makes a compelling case for the power of imagination. It also frees you from thinking that you need to give or make or buy all sorts of things to spark your little one's imagination. In the case of Harold, whatever he needs, he creates for himself, all with the help of one magic purple crayon. You've got a worn waxy stub of any color at all in that art bin that can spin the same magic. Harold's imagination delights and comforts him, and literally it shows him the way: "He also needed something to walk on. So he drew a path." A perfect bedtime story for especially evocative dreams, this wonderful story will surely help your little person make his own way too.

I love the simplicity of Harold and the Purple Crayon's drawings. Harold has trouble falling asleep, but his magic crayon takes him to wonderful worlds that he draws. He draws his way out of any problem that he encounters along the way, until he gets sleepy and draws his home window. Harold inspires creativity and resourcefulness - and the TV show is great too on HBO.

There is something about the clean illustrations in Harold and the Purple Crayon books that attract me and when I rediscovered these at the library, I soon had Gigi hooked. Harold can make anything with is his crayon and you never know where his crayon is going to lead him. I remember wishing such magical things could happen and I'm glad it's Gigi's time to believe.

I absolutely LOVED this book as a child and would read it over and over. It's a timeless classic that allows children's imaginations to run wild. Personally, I'm blaming this book for me being a day dreamer as a kid.

I think that this book is a good reminder to parents of the importance of imagination. I also like that the story focuses on simplicity and the message that you can create what you need with what you already have.

Want to talk to your kids about imagination? Use Harold to get you started, he creates an entire world with only his crayon and his imagination. Fun to read to little kids because they just take for granted that such things could really happen.
