Learn and Groove Maracas

For ages 6 months to 3 years

This is a rare toy that offers both a bit of distraction to a wee little one and a bit of instruction to an older sibling. It's a maraca - of course it's irresistible for a tiny person! And every time you give it a shake, an electronic voice counts from 1 to 10 in both English and Spanish. In a different mode, shakes introduce primary and secondary colors, also in both English and Spanish. While your preschooler may well already know numbers and colors in one language, perhaps a few tricks in another would be fun to try out on the playground. And how nice is it to find a toy that you can actually encourage your older child to share with a younger sibling, letting you exhale for a moment after that breathless vigilance as you tried to keep the tiniest Lego pieces out of arm's reach of the baby!

LeapFrog has another hit with the Learn and Groove Maracas. They are bilingual and feature fun music that even I don't get sick of. We have the Learn & Groove guitar as well and they make a perfect combo for a musical playdate. The only thing I thought was strange was that only one of the maracas is electronic -- but hey, that means only one item to replace the battery in! These are definitely a hit among the toddler to preschool set.

We have a shelf of music toys in our living room that gets used every day. Inevitably these maracas get separated, so beware: only one of them is electronic - the other is a traditional shaker. Besides the cute educational features (nice effort there), the maracas have one big advantage over many other electronic musical toys. Most feature music that gets annoying to parents really quickly. These maracas, however, play a gentle soothing salsa rhythm after the children stop playing with it and until we realize we have to get up to turn them off.
