The Kissing Hand

by Audrey Penn

For ages 2+ years

We must warn you -- you are a stronger person than many of us at the Savvy Source if you can actually make it through this one without choking up. We were sobbing, frankly. And that wasn't just on the first read. Sigh. This is big stuff. Heading off to school. The good news is that your little one will love school. The bad news is that he'd for sure love it more if you could maybe stay for most of it with him. The best news is that this sentimental little book will give you both a trick to know that you are really right there for him (and he for you) during the entire day. Mrs. Raccoon sends Chester off for his school night -- get it? Raccoons are noctural and children are not (or so you keep reminding him....) -- with a secret that you and your little one may just be re-enacting for years and years to come.

$10.79

I like to tell Kyle little stories that he will remember for specific reasons. Like that it's okay when a little bit of blood comes out of his body, if he gets a cut or something. I hear him repeat it to other people, as if he is trying to reassure himself. The Kissing Hand is a great story about taking a kiss to go, to keep him company all day long when he is out in the wide world, learning and playing and possibly coming up against difficult situations.

We love this book. We read it and applied it long before our oldest started school. It is easy to generalize the story to mean any time parent and child are apart, they are still with one another. It can even be used to soothe a child who doesn't want to go to sleep without their parent in the room. Many a night the kids have gone to bed with a kissing hand on their cheek.

This is the best book to have on hand to read before your child starts school. Chester is worried about leaving Mrs. Raccoon to go to school but together they devise a strategy that helps Chester cope with being away from her. Whether starting preschool or kindergarten for the first time, every child needs to know that you still love them even when they are away.

This really is the perfect book to read to your child before sending him off to preschool or kindergarten for the first time. It addresses many concerns that kids (and moms!) have about being away from mom and spending time at school. It also provides the perfect solution for what to do when mom and child miss each other during the day.
