Phonics Bus

by Leap Frog

For ages 6 months - 3 years

This little bus is one of those LeapFrog toys that just plain works. It speaks toddler-ese with clearly spoken words and sounds and catchy little tunes, and it's a cute little yellow bus with a kid-sized handle on top. What's not to love? Your littlest preschooler can cart it around the house, pushing all the individual letter buttons to hear (depending on the mode selected) the name of the letter, the sound the letter makes or a song associated with that letter. There are removable LeapFrog characters in the seats of the bus, and the little wheels actually roll along, playing three different versions of "Wheels on the Bus." Which means that when it's stuck in your head in the middle of the night, you'll have three different versions to cycle through as you drift back to sleep.. But never mind, the point is that your little one will love it. And if the alphabet song is running through his or her head in the middle of the night, just think how lucky you are. (Note: The Alphabet Pal caterpillar and the Letter Factory Fridge Magnets from LeapFrog are other similar toys, although not quite as grab-able as the little yellow bus.)

We have many Leap Frog toys, books and even DVD's in our home. We didn't have the Phonics Bus until the kids saw it at a friend's house and tried to take it home. It has the same familiar kid voice as the rest of the toy line which is easy for small children to understand. It is cute and makes it easy for kids to understand word sounds. They also love to sing along to "The Wheels on the Bus" which is one of their favorite songs.

We received this for Christmas last year when my daughter was just a one year old. I wasn't a fan of battery-operated toys until this came along. The music sticks in our heads, and we find ourselves singing along to the alphabet day and night. The best part - it really did emphasize learning and memorizing the alphabet. Now that my son has come along, he loves to use the "bus" to wheel around the living room while listening to the letters being sounded out for him. This toy is an award-winner in my parenting book.

My boys love this bus. Going along with the "Wheels on the Bus" tune, children can learn their letters while playing with the characters that ride the bus. Each character makes its own song and the letters around the edge of the bus do a fabulous job teaching my boys their phonics. Leapfrog succeeds with another toy yet again!

Sad to say, the first thing I taught my daughter to do with the letter-repeating buttons was press "I C U! U R A P-P! P-U!" (Say it out loud.) Still, she's always loved being able to press the buttons and make sounds, and though I generally shy away from electronic noise-making toys, this one was the toy that made the letter-phoneme link for her, so we were pleased.

A terrific sing-a-long toy, that's enjoyable on so many levels. From the colorful, sturdy construction to the "Every letter makes a sound..." song, this toy goes the distance. It will be relevant and revered for years to come.

I have yet to pick up a Leap Frog toy that didn't get used again and again. The characters also play and hold instruments.(If you take them out of the bus they are toys in and of themselves). I like that music and the alphabet are both represented in this toy. It's a hit!
