Discovering Nature's Alphabet

by Castella and Boyl

For ages 2-6 year

We are especially fond of alphabet books that reward careful observation of the world around us, finding letters in grand vistas and tiny mosaic detail. Instead of cityscapes, however, this absolute gem of a book turns to the natural world to inspire your preschooler (and your much older child, even the all grown up one deep inside your own mind) to look closely at his immediate world. The vistas are grand, all right, as in the Grand Canyon framing a "Y" and the tiny detail is exquisite, from a graceful "B" in a green leaf to the curlique "G" of a seedling. The text is a bit pedantic, but the photographs (from two to five for each letter, none staged or retouched in any way) are simply jaw-dropping.

Preschoolers are learning their letters and sounds or at least are being introduced to the concept. What a fun way to reinforce it by reading this book. The pictures are super creative and inspire thought about other items they can use around the house to create letters!

This is a picture book of natural objects in the shape of letters. What a wonderful way to capitalize on that growing imagination of a preschooler, who can find shapes in everything he sees. A pepper in the shape of a J, a cactus that looks like an S. Sounds like a morning with my kid!
