When we visit a preschool to see if it might be right for our children, the first thing we do is look around the classroom. Is there a dress-up corner? Are there plenty of art supplies and craft materials? Is there a quiet area where a child can look at books? But let's turn the tables for a moment. What would a preschool teacher look for if she came for a visit to your home? Not surprisingly, a lot of the same things. At least that's what our Savvy survey of some of the great preschool teachers from around the country tells us. They want us to have very simple toys and materials easily accessible to our kids for open-ended, imaginative play. There's nothing fancy on this list, but everything on it is essential to your preschooler's development and creativity.
- A place for quiet or creative time
- Wooden blocks
- Empty boxes of all shapes and sizes
- Fabric scraps
- Glue and tape
- Art supplies
- Playdough or modeling clay
- Dress-up clothes
- Stickers
- Child-safe scissors (Work with scissors is an important way to develop fine motor skills.)
- Different types of paper
- Old magazines and catalogs
- Different kinds of balls
- Funnels and cups for water play
- Practical life objects (We all know how much the little ones love to play with pots and pans!)
