Holiday Guide

Merry Christmas!

by Julie Yang -- Being Savvy Honolulu

If after all the presents are opened, the feast is eaten and the new toys are played with, your family still needs more stuff to do, there's not much to head out to today.  Christmas is one of those Holidays when most business close up to let their employees enjoy time with their families.

But don't worry, there are still places to head out and about to.  Just not many.

It's was a family tradition growing up to always go watch a Movie on Christmas Day.  Mostly because the movie theaters were one of the few things open that day.  At first the grown ups took us, but my brother and I kept the tradition going by calling up our friends to see the latest blockbuster after having Christmas brunch.  All movie theaters will be open if you want to make this part of your tradition too.

If you don't want to adhere to a movie schedule, you could still have family movie time at home.  Blockbuster video rental stores are also open Christmas Day.  You and your family could pop on over and choose something out together or one for the kids and one for the parents.

Or if you want a little more excitement, Dave and Busters at Ward Centers will be open today until 5pm.  We don't play video games at home, but we've had to visit Dave and Busters for occasional get togethers and parties.  Noah loves, loves, loves this place.  We have him make choices, count tickets out loud before handing them over, he learns about the whole concept of exchanging tickets to "buy" something, learns to ask for help if he needs it, and he even learns that life is unfair sometimes.

If you just want to walk around, the mall is closed, but you can bet Waikiki isn't.  Tourists still need to eat, shop and be merry, so you could use this light traffic and free meter parking day to take the family to explore our local tourist mecca.  A nice walk up and down Kalakaua should make everyone hungry enough to gobble up anything left over at home.

And don't forget our world famous, pristine beaches.  They are always open.  Where ever you live in Honolulu, it's an activity you don't have to plan much for.  Just grab some towels, some sand toys and your suits and head towards the ocean.  It's a Christmas activity the rest of America wishes they could do, so go and enjoy!

However you decide to spend today, I hope you and your family every happiness today.  Merry Christmas!
