Snacks and treats and everything sweet!
by Jill Notkin -- Being Savvy Boston
We love to eat in our house.By default, we also love to cook! This holiday season, we're going to spend time in the kitchen making all kinds of treats. Here are some delicious and really easy treats to make - and enjoy - with your little elves.J

Hello Dolly Biscuits (aka 7-Layer Bars)
1 Cup Graham Cracker Crumbs (these are fun to make yourself!Toss a bunch of graham crackers in a bag and let the kids pound them into "crumbs" with a heavy (but safe) utensil, like a rolling pin).
- 2 Cups Semisweet Chocolate Chips (I actually use milk chocolate).
- 1 Cup Sweetened Coconut Flakes.
- 1 Cup Chopped Walnuts.
- 1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk (I use the low-fat or fat-free kind).
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.Melt the butter and mix in crumbs.Pat the crumbs into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish.Layer in the chocolate, then the coconut, then the walnuts.Cover the top with the condensed milk.Bake for about 25 minutes or until the walnuts start to brown.Serve a tiny bit warm for extra yumminess!!
Milky Way Rice Krispie Squares (holiday-style)
- 5 Milky Way Chocolate Bars.
- 1 Stick of Butter.
- 2 Cups of Marshmallows.
- 4 Cups Rice Krispies.
- Red & Green Sprinkles for Christmas or Blue Sprinkles for Chanukah.
In a heavy pot, melt the chocolate bars and the butter.Stir in the marshmallows and stir a bit more.Stir in the cereal and stir.Line 9 x 13 inch baking dish with wax paper and pour mixture in.With a spoon or (clean) little hands, even out the top.Pour sprinkles on top and refrigerate. An instant classic!
Cookies in Holiday Shapes
- 3 Eggs, Beaten.
- ?? Cup Corn Oil.
- 1 Cup Sugar.
- 1 TSP Vanilla.
- 3 Cups Flour.
- 1 TSP Baking Powder.
(and if you threw in a few chocolate chips, who would know?J) Combine all ingredients. On a well-floured surface, roll out the dough. If it's difficult to work with, chill it for 15-minutes.With cookie cutter or with a knife, cut your dough into festive shapes.Bake at 350 degrees for 8 - 10 minutes. For more fun activities to do with your kids this holiday season, keep checking back at boston.savvysource.com!I'm full of creative ideas that are fun for everyone!Happy baking!!
