...book picks for the holidays

by Cynthia -- Being Savvy Pasadena

Here at Savvy Source, we'll be offering some picks for beloved and road-tested books and toys for the holidays. Watch for these throughout the month and into December.

Some of my favorite books:

  • Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey: A little girl on a berry-picking trip with her family has a gentle encounter with a mama bear and her cub, also foraging for berries. Delicious to read with your toddler with a fresh bowl of blueberries at your side! Let's hear it for intrepid girls who like the great outdoors and healthy eating.
  • One Fish, Two Fish, by Dr. Seuss: Quirky counting by the much beloved Doc. This also comes in a waterproof abridged version, so you can continue the fun in the bathtub.
  • How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?, by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague: They stall, melodramatically! A great bedtime book to giggle at those silly other people who don't quite want to say goodnight. Some versions come with a little stuffed dinosaur holding a hanky-sized blankie.
  • Jazz Baby, by Lisa Wheeler: Fun musical wordplay from a baby gets his entire family to scat along, until the last songs sung merge blues into lullabies. A lilting way to sing your child's day into night.
  • Stellaluna, by Janell Cannon: Bat baby Stellaluna gets separated from her mama and temporarily lives with a new bird family in their nest until she returns home. This beautiful little book is an oblique look at so many things: being a guest in a very different enivronment. Overnight stays and how fun but also a little scary they are. Difference, and what that means; basic kindness in spite of outward differences.
So what are some of yours?
