Event Information

See how the Harding family celebrated Christmas in 1853 with fresh greens from the plantation, lively music and a simply decorated tree lit with candles. Hear how their antebellum holiday evolved after the Civil War into a grand celebration including massive Christmas trees decorated with tinsel and imported ornaments from Europe, printed holiday cards, and expensive gifts wrapped in colorful paper. See how holiday celebrations changed in the 20th century with the advent of electric Christmas tree lights, plastic ornaments and even characters such as Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.
