Event Information

The three-concert season of the Sinfonietta of Riverdale will begin on October 24th with “Baroque and Beyond,” a concert of favorites by composers like Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, spiced with something less familiar: a keyboard concerto by Bach’s son, Carl Philip Emmanuel. Says Artistic Director and Conductor, Mark Mandarano: “In this concert, half will be in traditional Baroque style; in the other half, we will survey what happened afterward with J. S Bach’s son, Carl Philip Emmanuel. We will also see how the legacy of this great music has been perpetuated by performing classic arrangements that were created in the 20th century.” The members of the Sinfonietta will be joined by soloists Andrew Appel, a harpsichordist and Baroque music specialist known in Riverdale for his work as the director of music at Wave Hill. They will also be joined by soprano Ilana Davidson, a Riverdale resident who has sung in concert, opera and chamber music series across the globe and who performed on the Grammy-winning recording of William Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence and Experience conducted by Leonard Slatkin. To arrange for interviews with Ms. Davidson or Mr. Appel, please contact the Sinfonietta at 917-689-1211 or info@sinfoniettanyc.org. During the three-concert 2010-2011 season, this fine ensemble will perform a wide range of music, including newly created work. On March 13th, “Fresh Impressions” will sample from the rich history of French music and will feature the works by Debussy and Ravel in arrangements created specially for this concert. Three composers have agreed to participate in this innovative project: Roger Zare, winner of the ASCAP-Rudolf Nissim Prize; Alan Fletcher, President of the Aspen Music Festival and a composer whose work has been performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony; and David Bruce, from London, who has enjoyed several world-premiere performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and who has written works for soprano Dawn Upshaw among many other prominent musicians. The final concert of the season on May 15th, “Wagner and Schoenberg,” explores the sometimes disturbing relationship between art, politics and world events. A pre-concert panel of scholars and musicians will convene to discuss the issues. Mark Mandarano conducts the performances.   The concerts of the Sinfonietta of Riverdale have gained a reputation for fine musicianship and stimulating programs (“Off-the-hook fabulous,” Time Out New York; “High culture has flowed northward into the Bronx,” The New Yorker; “Some Big Music for Little Riverdale,” The New York Daily News). The concerts have attracted the attention of world-famous composers and musicians, notably, audience members Esa-Pekka Salonen (former music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic) and Alan Gilbert (music director of the New York Philharmonic).  Concert Details: OCTOBER 24, 2010 BAROQUE AND BEYONDJohann Sebastian Bach, Ricercare a 6 & Chorale PreludesAntonio Vivaldi, Sinfonia for StringsGeorge Frideric Handel, Arias from Rodelinda, Giulio Cesare, Joshua & Il                           Trionfo del Tiempo  – Ilana Davidson, sopranoC.
