The Christmas Revels celebrates the end of the dark winter and the rebirth of the bright new year, the ritual of the winter solstice, which is as old as mankind and embraces the familiar rites of Christmas. Revels has produced this distinctive holiday celebration every year since 1971, incorporating traditional music and dance, rituals and folk plays, comedy and carols from all parts of the world.
With the great hoop of life as our theme we join the circle of the seasons at the winter solstice with extraordinary music, singing, and dance from the heart of America. We offer a new celebration of the shortest day inspired and informed by musical contributions from Appalachia, from the African American South, from the pastoral Shaker communities, and from our own New England. Featured performers include traditional singer and clogger extraordinaire Suzannah Park, the multi-talented David Coffin (celebrating his 30 years on the Revels stage), gospel singer Janice Allen, Native American flute player Leon Joseph Littlebird, actress Bobbie Steinbach, Cambridge Symphonic Brass Ensemble, The Smoky Mountain Dancers, The Pinewoods Morris Men, The Roaring Gap Chorus, and the adorable and talented Rocky River Children. Audiences of all ages will enjoy an American mummers play, carols and rounds for all to sing, 'Wicked John and the Devil' (a'Jack Tale' from the Appalachian Mountains). Susan Cooper's classic poem, 'The Shortest Day', Junkanoo (an early Boxing Day celebration from the Americas), and Revels' signature piece, 'Lord of the Dance' that will have you dancing with the cast, through the aisles of Sanders Theatre and into the grand lobby of Memorial Hall.
