Event Information

The National Mall will once again play host to the Smithsonian Institution's FREE International Kite Festival this Saturday, March 27th from 10 am to 4 pm.

You can bring your own handmade or store-bought kite to fly on the grounds of the National Mall, or you can just come and see kite displays, competitions, and demonstrations.  Don't worry if the only kite you have is a Hello Kitty from the dollar store -- the best part about this festival is that it is truly for everyone.  The plastic Hello Kitties fly proudly (albeit several feet below) some amazing handmade international kites.

People of all ages will find something to suit their fancy.  Even if you're not really into kites, bring a blanket and enjoy a nice picnic on the lawns of the Washington monument.  The kites create a very spring-like, colorful background.

Important tips:

  • Take the metro because parking will be difficult and expensive (Smithsonian stop).
  • If you have kids in the midst of potty training, make sure to bring a portable potty.  There are few bathrooms within short walking distance of the monument and when you find one, the lines are long.  And you know when they've got to go, they HAVE GOT TO GO!
  • Pack a lunch, lots of water and snacks, and a blanket to sit on. Last year, food vendors were also a bit hard to find and had a limited selection.
  • Don't forget the sunscreen if it's sunny.  There isn't much shade on the grounds of the monument.
For general information about the event and detailed information on the kite flying competitions, please visit www.kitefestival.org.  Hope to see you there!  (You'll know it's me because we'll be flying a princess kite and a GIANT sized frog!)
