Cooking Classes for Kids

If you find yourself trying to decide on extra-curricular activities for your kids, you might want to consider a cooking class.  It might not be as conventional as soccer or ballet, but it's at least as much fun and teaches a wonderful skill that kids can really use.

Create a Cook in Newton is this Savvy family's newest find, and after just a few classes, it's proving to be an excellent experience.  The youngest pupils, Kitchen Helpers, are 3 to 5 years old and are taught in a child-friendly environment which includes adjustable tables and chairs.  They use all types of cooking tools, including safe plastic knives, and do everything from chopping to measuring to stirring and of course - eating!  Each week there is a new menu which typically involves 2 parts.  Last week, Kitchen Helpers chopped and sauteed onions and mushrooms, measured spinach and cheese, and baked their own delicious quesadillas.  Next, they chopped different fruit and measured out other ingredients which, combined, made Mexican fruit salad.  It was healthy, delicious, fun to make, and enough to bring home for the kids to eat for dinner!

Another great reason to choose a cooking class is that it is something that you and your child (at the 3 - 5 year-old point) can do together, rather than a drop-off group.  Also, it teaches them simple math, measuring, and good food and cooking hygiene.  And it's fun!!

Classes at Create a Cook are geared toward kids 3+ and adults are offered a full range of classes to choose from as well.  They have birthday parties, workshops, even school-vacation classes.  Cooking is done in their state-of-the-art kitchens.  For more info, contact one of their very nice staff members at 617-795-2223.
