For the Kids

by Various Artists

For ages 1-6 years

This compilation album (and its companion second and third volumes) plays like a greatest hits of kid music. A lot of the songs themselves - "Mahna Mahna," "It's Alright to Cry" - will take you right back to your own childhood, but the artists are very much of your little one's era - Cake, Barenaked Ladies, and the like. (We are especially grateful to Barenaked Ladies for weaving the word "linoleum" so brilliantly into a song about letters!) And the Muppet Show flashbacks are particularly endearing for us, as is the sight of our little heads bobbing up and down to "Mahna Mahna" like the puppet rockers of the 1970s. And we must warn you - listening to Sarah McLachlan's "The Rainbow Connection" as a parent gives it a whole new angle. Fumble around for the sunglasses and the explanations as the sentimental tears well up when you hear and sweetly imagine your little one singing along with Kermit.

We're big Cake fans in our house, so when we had the chance to share the musical stylings of John McCrea and Co. without fear of random f-bombs, we were overjoyed. Our kids love getting their Mahna Mahna on and actually yell at me if I put the Sesame Street/Muppet Show version on by accident.

I hate most kids' music. I hate to admit it, but sappy kids songs with the happy sing songy voices just annoy me. My kids have been listening to MY music since they were born, but I have to be careful about language and adult themes. When I found this CD a few years ago, it was the perfect compromise. We can listen to the Barenaked Ladies singing La La La La Lemon (my kids' favorite) and everyone is happy. Sarah McLachlan has a wonderful version of Rainbow Connection on here as well. I sang this to my boys when they were babies and listening to Sarah's version always takes me instantly back to that time.
