Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late

by Mo Willems

For ages 2-6 years

Sometimes a little humor and a little reverse psychology are needed to persuade a wakeful preschooler that it really is time for bed. If that is the case at your house, allow us to suggest acquainting your preschooler with Mo Willems's pigeon. This stubborn, whiny, kvetching yet somehow oddly appealing bird turns the tables on his kiddie readers who are instructed, on the first page, not to let him stay up late. They must fend off all of the usual excuses (I'm not tired, I want water) and other more inventive delay tactics. Will your preschoolers find this amusing? Undoubtedly. Will it teach them henceforth to march quietly to bed with no complaints? Unlikely, but then, would we really want them to?

This book is pure genius when it comes to bedtime antics. I pay good money to hear Gigi say "Go to bed" to someone (something) else instead of hearing me say it fifty times in a row. Mo Willems has quickly become a favourite in our house and it's easy to understand why. Don't let the pigeons stay up late!

I'm always looking for new bedtime books because I get bored reading the same things over and over again. I was delighted to find this one. It's a little quirky and puts a smile on our faces before parting for the night.

We are huge Mo fans in our house and this was one of the first titles on our shelves. It was a great help in cajoling our little one into her nightly bedtime. Fortunately she shares pigeon's love of hot dogs too!

I know this is my second love comment for Mo Willems, but if you can pull off a New York accent and have your child say "GO TO BED PIGEON" eveytime he tries to bargain? You'll both look forward to bedtime. Gah. LOVE THIS BOOK.

This book is a great one to emphasize expression - changing volume and acting out as you read it. All of my kids - ages 2-6 LOVE this book and happily tell the pigeon, "NO!" altogether! Great family reading!

I have such a great time reading this book to my son because he totally gets into it by telling the pigeon "no". This is definitely a book that kids can relate to because, just like them, the pigeon comes up with every excuse in the book not to go to bed. The simple text make it a great book for the toddler set as well.
